“What the Plunge Means to Me”

I learned to swim at the Plunge before I started school at Washington. My day care provider, Mrs. Moore would take us to the Plunge to learn to swim.

My mother works at Chevron. And at lunch time she would come over to watch me swim.

My best friend, Kenny was leaving California that summer. So Mrs. Moore made a video that summer of all the kids swimming. This was the last year we were all together.

The Plunge m
eans fun, adventure, friendships, and happiness. That is what the Plunge means to me.

"What the Plunge Means to Me"

Not too long ago when my mom, aunts, and uncles were my age they enjoyed going to the Plunge daily. My mom called it "The Age of Innocence".
My mother, aunts and my uncles grew up in Richmond on the southside. My mother told me of long hot summer days spent at the Plunge. You could walk down Cutting Boulevard during that time. You didn't have to worry about getting kidnapped or getting lost.
Just about every kid in the neighborhood met at the Plunge. It only cost 25 cents back then and you could swim all day. The inside structure was old and my mom said it reminded her of an old mansion. The smell was old too. My mom said if I watched a movie from the 1960's, I could possibly understand how she felt. She laughed when I asked her about her memories of the Plunge. She was like a little girl again, telling me stories of rushing to finish chores, grabbing a towel, swim suit and cap, also racing with her friends, brothers and sisters to spend a day full of diving, splashing and racing in the pool.
The Plunge means to me a time where kids can swim and have fun.
